The Workshop on Sino-NZ Pesticide Management was held in Beijing on April 17th, 2012. Ms. Debbie Morris, Director for Systems, Support & Agricultural Compounds and Veterinary Medicines (ACVM) of the Ministry for Primary Industries of New Zealand, and Mr. Gu Baogen, Deputy Director-General of the Institute for the Control of Agrochemicals of the Ministry of Agriculture (ICAMA) attended and addressed the meeting. The Workshop was joined by over 20 experts from ICAMA and ACVM.

Gu and Morris agreed and emphasized that intensifying cooperation in pesticide regulation is of importance for ensuring agricultural production, ecological conservation and safe consumption. The Workshop is aimed at promoting bilateral exchange and cooperation in pesticide regulation, and hence boosting agricultural trade and pesticide trade between the two countries.

At the Workshop, experts from the two countries exchanged views on regulations on pesticide registration, pharmaceuticals, import and export, marketing and application, pesticide registration system, data requirements and appraisal procedures on pesticide registration, system and technical standard for testing pesticide quality and management measures governing pesticide import and export.

Both sides reached consensus on jointly building cooperation mechanism, regular exchange on pesticide regulation, jointly fighting against illegal trade, standard-setting for pesticide Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) for agricultural products and participation in international pesticide-related affairs.

Prior to the Workshop, the New Zealand delegation visited the laboratory for pesticide quality and pesticide residue testing of ICAMA. The Workshop is followed by visits to Jiangsu Institute for the Control of Agrichemicals as well as major local importers and exporters of pesticide.
